Olga Isart Bosch, an experienced nurse at SCIAS Hospital de Barcelona, initiated a study to explore whether using specialized Swash® Perineum Wipes could more e ectively prevent incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) compared to traditional methods of soaping, rinsing, drying, and moisturizing. Her goal was to enhance patient care and gather critical data on the prevalence of IAD within the hospital.

During 2016, 36% of incontinent patients at Hospital de Barcelona developed IAD during hospital stay.

Starting July 1st, 2017, all incontinent patients admitted to the ward were enrolled in the study until 125 patients had been included in each group. Patients received incontinence care using either the traditional method or Swash® Perineum Wipes.
The study was conducted in the Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties Units (UH13 and UH14) of Hospital de Barcelona–SCIAS.
This was an experimental, observational, and descriptive study designed to assess the incidence of IAD in two groups of incontinent patients, each receiving perineal hygiene using a different method.
